The Daisy Community is a Lower Elementary Classroom

“The child gives us a beautiful lesson – that in order to form and maintain our intelligence, we must use our hands.” – Maria Montessori

Daisy Community

The Lower Elementary Community builds upon the strong foundation established in the Early Childhood years. Designed for children ages 6 to 9, this classroom encourages students to expand their intellectual curiosity and apply their skills in more abstract and collaborative ways.

The Montessori-trained Elementary Guide presents the Great Lessons, which inspire wonder and ignite the imagination, connecting children to the story of the universe, the development of life, human history, and the advancement of mathematics and language. Through these interconnected studies, children begin to see knowledge as a whole rather than separate subjects.

Core areas include Mathematics, Language, Geometry, Biology, Geography, History, Science, and Cultural Studies. Students work both individually and in small groups, fostering collaboration, responsibility, and independence. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, problem-solving, and respect for self, others, and the environment.

The extended Montessori work cycle allows students to immerse themselves in meaningful studies across a variety of subjects, including:

  • Mathematics: concrete materials that lead to a deep understanding of abstract concepts
  • Language: reading, writing, grammar, and creative expression that strengthen communication skills
  • Cultural Studies: geography, history, and science lessons that spark imagination and global awareness
  • Practical Life & Grace and Courtesy: opportunities to build independence, responsibility, and strong interpersonal skills
  • Art and Music: integrated into daily work to inspire creativity and self-expression

Our teacher is trained in Montessori education for Elementary I (Grades 1–3), bringing the expertise to guide children through this critical period of development. With individualized lessons, small group work, and hands-on exploration, each child is supported in their academic progress while their curiosity and intrinsic motivation are nurtured.

The Elementary classroom at Smithville Montessori Academy is a community of collaboration and respect. Students learn not only academic skills, but also responsibility, problem-solving, and empathy—skills that prepare them for lifelong learning and leadership.
